What does Denti-Cal cover at Monteluz?

Denti-Cal is the dental program under Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid). It covers medically necessary dental care for eligible adults and children. At Monteluz, we accept Denti-Cal for oral surgery, root canal treatment, surgical extractions, and endodontic care — all performed by board-certified specialists. Adult benefits were fully restored in 2022. Most covered services cost you nothing out-of-pocket.

    The Monteluz process

    1. Confirm your Medi-Cal status

Make sure your Medi-Cal coverage is active. If you're unsure, call us — we verify eligibility at no charge before your appointment.

    2. Schedule your exam

Your exam and X-rays are covered by Denti-Cal. We review your condition and determine the treatment you need.

    3. We submit your authorization

Most oral surgery and root canal procedures require a Treatment Authorization Request (TAR). We prepare and submit all paperwork on your behalf.

    4. Receive your treatment

Once authorized, your procedure is performed by our specialists. Covered services cost you $0 out-of-pocket.

    5. Follow-up care included

Post-operative visits and follow-up care for covered procedures are included under Denti-Cal at no additional cost.

    What does Denti-Cal cost you?

For services covered by Denti-Cal, your out-of-pocket cost is $0. Coverage includes the exam, X-rays, treatment authorization, and the procedure itself. Some services require prior approval (TAR) — we handle all of that for you. If a service is not covered, we will tell you in advance and discuss your options before proceeding.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Denti-Cal cover root canals for adults?

Yes. Root canal treatment on permanent teeth is a covered Denti-Cal benefit for adults with full-scope Medi-Cal. Anterior (front tooth) root canals are covered with standard documentation. Posterior (back tooth) root canals require a Treatment Authorization Request (TAR) with periapical X-rays — we submit this for you. Emergency root canals on accidentally avulsed or fractured teeth do not require prior authorization.

What oral surgery procedures does Medi-Cal cover?

Denti-Cal covers surgical extractions including impacted teeth, treatment of dental abscesses and infections, biopsy of suspicious lesions, and maxillofacial surgery. All covered procedures must be medically necessary and performed by a participating provider.

Do I need a referral to see an oral surgery specialist with Denti-Cal?

For specialist care at Monteluz, your general dentist may provide a referral, or you can call us directly and we will coordinate with your Denti-Cal plan. We will handle eligibility verification and authorization from there.

What is a Treatment Authorization Request (TAR) and will Monteluz handle it?

A TAR is a prior approval request submitted to DHCS before certain procedures. It includes X-rays, clinical notes, and a treatment plan. Required for most oral surgery, endodontic, and periodontic procedures. Monteluz prepares and submits all TARs on your behalf — you do not need to do anything.

What happens if I need emergency oral surgery?

Emergency dental procedures — including extractions, abscess drainage, and treatment for severe pain, swelling, or infection — are covered with relaxed prior-authorization requirements. Same-day emergency appointments are available. Call us at 909-567-2024.

Does Denti-Cal cover wisdom tooth removal?

Yes. Surgical extraction of impacted wisdom teeth is a covered Denti-Cal benefit when medically necessary. A TAR is required and we submit it for you.

Are dental implants covered by Medi-Cal?

Dental implants have very limited coverage under standard Denti-Cal. They may be covered in specific medically necessary cases (such as after cancer treatment or trauma), but are generally not a standard benefit. If you need tooth replacement, we can discuss alternatives covered by Denti-Cal, such as dentures, or financing options for implants.

Did Denti-Cal coverage change in 2026?

Yes. Starting July 1, 2026, adults aged 19 and older who do not qualify for federal full-scope Medi-Cal based on immigration status will only receive emergency dental services — not routine or specialty dental care. This change does not affect: children under 19, pregnant members (and up to one year postpartum), former foster youth under 26, or adults who qualify for federal full-scope Medi-Cal. If you are unsure whether your coverage was affected, call us at 909-567-2024 and we will verify for free.
